So it’s been four years since I’ve bothered posting. I still went to games, but lets be honest, up until away against Northampton (THE turning point imo) it was an hideous four years. Like that film Groundhog Day, but the worst version of.
Funnily enough in my last post, in September of 2021, I did elude to the fact that great Charlton managers have always had a link with the club. Now I was dubious when NJ was appointed. And if I’m honest I was one of those slowly but surely thinking my hunch he was the wrong appointment was right prior to Northampton away. And I’m not afraid to admit how wrong I was! What an amazing journey he took us on for the second half of last season. But let’s look at now and the way forward. I’ve been a lazy blogger but a loyal Charlton supporter, simply quietly in the background.
We have to give a massive shout out to the owners of our wonderful club. None of the current group like our previous trio of retarded idiots have particularly put their heads above the parapet. Simply got on with the job in hand, sensibly backed the manager and improved the infrastructure of the club. The deluded Deuchebag, with his flawed idea of a network of clubs, believe it or not I think his ego enjoyed the attention. The East Street Spivvy fraudsters. Sanddergard with his embarrassing Charlton fighting song. In many ways he was the worst out of the three. A massive ego backed with no real money he was willing to part with and no plan.
So we come to this afternoon. Our first game back in the Championship since we were unluckily relegated thanks to Brentfords capitulation on the last day of the season. (Oh and a couple of players tapping out!)
The board, for the second (or third?) window backed our Manager. 9 incoming, all improving on those who joined over the past two windows.
And what a day at The Valley. Absolutely buzzing, Despite the stats I saw on Sky we bossed the game for much of the first half, and certainly punched the same weight as Watford. The game opened up towards the end, and I began to panic that there may be a sucker punch coming. However some inspired substitutions just at the right time, Leaburn was unlucky not to win the game for us. (If he’s back and making that much on a nuisance of himself, the he’s like a tenth new signing!).
Six minutes added on and the Valley faithful truly became the 12th man that’s so often mentioned. The players looked like they thought if they kept going they could nick this game.
Coventry’s corner, nodded back into the box for new boy Knibbs to pounce on, like a true poacher, and poke into the net. What a day! After years of bad owners, mostly questionable managers, we do actually, at last seem to have our Charlton back.
It’s been a whist.
